Norway on Flickr Commons: County Archives in Sogn og Fjordane
The County Archives in Sogn og Fjordane is the most recent addition to the Flickr Commons. The collection offers more than 300 photos, including numerous group and individual portraits of women. In some cases, such as with this photo, the names of individuals in the photographs are not known. Gaman and the Story of the Vest with a Thousand Knots
This post on the Smithsonian's Eye Level blog features a Senninbari (literally, thousand-person-stitches) vest that was made by the mother of George Matsushita while she was interned at the Amache camp in Colorado. Each of the 1,000 French-tied knots on the vest were tied by a different person in the camp.
The exhibition The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts from the Japanese Internment Camps, 1942-1946 continues at the Renwick Gallery through January 30, 2011. NPR's The Creative Art Of Coping In Japanese Internment (6 min 23 sec) includes additional background information and sample images from the collection.
